Near North Neighborhood Association Meeting

March 6, 2012

MUNI Transition to the Near South Neighborhood

– The move south will start with Katie and City Staff talking with city council members Eliot Glassheim and Hal Gershmam to decide boundaries.  The NSN will consist of parts of both of their wards so meeting with them and getting their input will be a key part of the process.

– Joint Neighborhood Meeting in April

  • Neighbors from the NNN and the NSN will get together to discuss previous accomplishments and ideas for future improvements.

-Walking Tour in June

  • Just like in the NNN there will be a walking tour in June with Mayor Brown in the NSN

–  Sustaining the Near North Neighborhood Association

  • Staff will be available to help guide neighbors in the NNN until the end of the summer.  After that, city staff will become more like a resource to provide guidance and assistance to neighbors when they need it.  City staff will always be available to help with issues and provide help in any way they can, they will just not be directly involved in leading neighborhood meetings anymore.
  • In order to help improve activity within the association information will be sent out to neighbors explaining the transition and how they can become more involved to help keep improving their neighborhood.
    • Door-to-door flyer, emails, surveys, and other means are being used to get the information out there.
    • Block Party/Mixer event!
      • This event is tentatively scheduled for Thursday June 14tharound 6:30pm at Wilder School.
        • Goal of this event is to get neighbors out and interacting with one another.  Building key relationships will help the neighborhood and the association stay proactive about any issues that may come in the future and provide contacts on how to resolves those problems.
  • Email contact
    • In order to help keep neighbors directly in the loop about the transition, neighbors will be getting personal emails from city staff asking for input.  Your help in easing the transition and maintaining the Association is very important to us so please, be on the lookout for these emails.

-UND’s Big Event

  • NNNA is seeking out individuals (elderly, disabled, etc.) who may need assistance with various projects like painting their house, raking leaves, picking up garbage, etc.  If we can get enough people interested, the NNNA will apply to have Big Event student volunteers to come into the neighborhood and help out various neighbors.
    • This is a great opportunity to help out a neighbor so please, if you know anyone interested, contact Katie Brockpahler at 792-2867 by April 2nd.

Spring Garage Sale

–          We would like to plan a NNN spring garage sale in collaboration with the Riverside garage sale (usually mid-May).  We could try to recruit residents from both neighborhoods to hold their own sale.  We could also map all of the sales and distribute information at local businesses.

The next Near North Meeting will be on April 10th, at the YMCA Gold room at 6:30pm.  Please attend and help us plan for the upcoming Block Party!!!
